Horse question: What can I feed my horse to help keep the flies from biting him?
My horse is in a barn with 8 other horses and the stalls are cleaned daily and all fresh soft wood shavings is in the stalls and all through the barn. There is very little odor in the barn and ventilation is very good, but there seem to be an excess of flies and when I go there in the evenings all of the horses are constantly stomping their hoofs to get the flies off of their legs, They seem really bothered. My horse has an injured hip or leg, maybe due to be kicked by another horse, and he has been limping some, so I really don't want hi having to oversuse his leg and having to stomp on the concrete floor and make it worse. I am totally into organics and anything non-toxic, so please don't suggest and products like fly sprays. I have read different natural or herbal remedies, but I really would like personal opinions and ideas that have been tried by some of you horse lovers who also want to take the very best care of your equine friend ; )
garlic wont work thats to kill fleas after they bite.
.here is what I use in a spray bottle for my pets and on their collars or halters
mix any or all of these essential oils with alchohal or olive oil or expensive almond oil ..only a few drops of each essential oil in needed
wormwood oil
cedar oil
eucalyptus oil
spearment oil
smells nice and is organic

Horse Care Tips for Winter
As winter approaches a lot of health issues come into picture. Moist and dusty softens skin and causes irritation. It also causes scratches on the skin through which germs and bacteria enter. This further makes the skin sore with oozing scabs. When these scabs appear on the back and topline they are referred as rain rot and when they appear on legs they are referred as scratches.
The best prevention is to make sure the affected area is always dry. To keep the horse dry is a tough job though if the horse is living out you can make sure it is dry by the use of blanket. We also need to make sure that the gateway and watering areas are not too poached. Applying a barrier cream to the dry legs before turning out can be very helpful.
Scrubbing of antibacterial solution to the affected areas is also a good thing. Several times antibiotics may need to clear up so consulting a vet is also a good idea.
Standing for long hours in wet and dry weather conditions causes Thrush. The main symptom of this is black, smelly discharge from the grooves at the side of the frog and this could be very severe too. If the frog and sole become very soft and sensitive it is a sign that thrush is very severe.
Avoiding filthy living conditions and maintaining a hygienic environment are the ways of preventing the severe conditions. There are many other treatments for which you could consult a good vet.
